Dentin is the supporting foundation material of the tooth. It provides support to the outer enamel shell. Unlike enamel, your body is able to continue to form dentin throughout your lifetime from the cells within the internal portion of the tooth. The purpose of dentin is to provide the structural foundation to the harder, outer enamel.
Dentin provides a protective layer to the soft internal pulpal tissues. The pulpal tissue of the tooth containing the nerve and blood supply is very vascular and cellular, providing the nutrients to each tooth from the jaw through its roots.
Dentin, is only 70% mineral, and is much less mineralized than enamel. Unlike dental enamel, dentin consists of collagen fibers mixed with the hydroxlylapitite. The significantly lower concentration of this mineral and presence of these fibers contribute measurably to its more flexible nature, similar to that of bone. However lower mineral content t contributes to dentin being' substantially lower in its' hardness than enamel.
As we age, dentin continues to form internally in the pulp chamber of the tooth. This provides added protection to the tooth and pulp tissues as the harder enamel is lost from wear caused by abrasion, grinding, clenching, decay, or chemical erosion. The dentin provides the tooth its natural, warm bioesthetic beauty and internal color, while providing the tooth its constant protection against harmful stimuli.
